Balwyn Evergreen - where you can have your cake and eat it too

When was the last time a slice of cake made your day? At Balwyn Evergreen, we don’t need much of an excuse to put the kettle on and gather around for a chat.

However, International Cake Day (July 20) gives us the perfect reason to celebrate something sweet - connection.

Behind every sponge, slice or biscuit shared at our morning teas is a generous heart.

Our wonderful volunteer bakers are the quiet heroes of these gatherings, lovingly preparing homemade treats that bring comfort, conversation and a real sense of community to the table.

One of those volunteers is Rosie Adams, 75, who turns up every Tuesday at Balwyn Evergreen and bakes something delicious – from chewy cookies to her famous banana slice.

"I have always loved to cook and wanted to volunteer in a different and tasty way!" Rosie says.

Whether it’s a classic scone, a lemon drizzle or a family recipe handed down through generations, it’s not only the cake that brings people together, but also the care that goes into it.

Morning tea at Balwyn Evergreen is where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and laughter rises as easily as a perfect pavlova. And for some of our members, it’s one of the most social parts of their week - a time to be seen, heard and welcomed.

This International Cake Day, we are raising our teacups to the volunteers who keep our cake tins full and our community spirit even fuller. It’s a sweet reminder that sometimes, the simplest things, like a cuppa and a slice, can make the biggest difference.
