This National Diabetes Week (July 13-19), we are taking the opportunity at Balwyn Evergreen to shine a light on a condition that affects so many in our community.
We won’t sugar-coat it - more than 1.3 million Australians are living with diabetes, and many more are at risk. That’s why awareness, early detection and prevention have never been more important.
Enjoying the occasional sweet treat is part of life, but it’s important to be mindful of our everyday habits. However, Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for up to 90 per cent of all diabetes cases, is largely preventable.
The good news? You don’t need to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. Small, sustainable changes, such as moving more, eating well and staying socially connected, can have a meaningful impact.
Our weekly group exercise classes, and social support group programs are not only great for the body but is also good for the mind and spirit. We see every day how movement, routine and social engagement can make a real difference in people’s health and wellbeing.
Not only that, but our volunteer cooks and bakers create delicious, healthy meals and treats for our programs that you don't have to feel guilty about.
We also run a monthly column in our newsletter by qualified nutritionist Ruby Cheung. Her column, Food For Thought, looks sustainable and achievable ways we can stay healthy.
We also know that managing a health condition, whether for yourself or a loved one, can feel overwhelming. However, you are not alone. The team at Balwyn Evergreen is here to provide practical support, a listening ear and a place to feel part of something bigger.
This week is a reminder that it’s worth checking in with your GP, your diet, your daily habits and your sense of wellbeing. Because small steps can lead to meaningful change.
